Resident Faculty Resident Assistant
Job Description 2026-2027
The mission of Residential Life is to facilitate student transitions into the intellectual and social communities of the University of California, Berkeley and to promote personal wellbeing and respect for the community needs of all residents. Situated within Residential Life, the Resident Faculty Program supports this mission by connecting residents with current University of California, Berkeley faculty who live in the Residence Halls and eat at the dining commons. Faculty also participate in programming throughout the academic year that supports residents in developing their academic identities. These events and activities are opportunities for residents to build their academic community, learn of academic resources and opportunities, and expand their academic skill sets.
The Resident Faculty Resident Assistant (RFRA) works within a team of RFRA peers, Resident Directors, and faculty to develop, promote, and facilitate events and activities for the Resident Faculty Program. RFRAs are required to work an average of three hours per week during fall and spring semesters, which includes mandatory training sessions and meetings as well as independent work time that is negotiated with their direct supervisor. The three hours per week are included in the nineteen hours per week for the RA role, and RFRAs have reduced RA programming requirements. Working hours may include evenings and weekends. In addition to supporting Resident Faculty programming, RFRAs represent and promote the program within their hall staff community and beyond, which may include announcements and tabling shifts in the dining commons and at campus-wide events like GBO and CAL Day.
Terms of Contract
This is a part-time contract appointment, with a maximum duration of 1 year. This position is not renewable; however Resident Faculty Resident Assistants will have the opportunity to apply for this position the following academic year, contingent on their offer and acceptance of a live-in student staff position.
Essential Duties
Day-Of Event Facilitation (42%)
- Set up and break down event venues, including the arrangement of chairs, tables, decorations, and other supplies
- Welcome guests to the venue, assisting with check-in tables and ensuring access to buildings
- Serve food and drinks to attendees
- Provide high levels of customer service and relevant information to event attendees
- Support the organization of transportation, if needed
- Other tasks as assigned by Resident Director(s) or faculty
Marketing and Publicity (33%)
- Create, share, and post flyers in Residential Halls
- Add flyers and other marketing content to email newsletters and social media accounts
- Oversee email communication with residents and potential event attendees and manage event RSVP lists
- Collaborate with other RFRAs to ensure residential communities are aware of all Resident Faculty programming
- Table at dining commons or on-campus resource fairs, as needed
Event Planning and Preparation (15%)
- Prepare for and attend all meetings with event planning team
- Advise event planning team when finalizing event logistics, offering perspectives resident needs
- Communicate with event planning team often over email and Slack, providing updates on task completion and relevant event information
- Communicate with third party vendors, like venues, transportation, and on-campus organizations
Training and Support (10%)
- Participate in mandatory RFRA training, which will primarily take place during Hall Staff training prior to the start of Fall & Spring semesters. See the section “Terms of Employment” for more details
- Meet with Residential Academic Success Specialist and RFRA team at least twice per semester
- Participate in additional meetings and trainings, as needed
Expectations
- Check and respond to emails from supervisor and ResLife team during the summer months (June-August)
- Resident Faculty Resident Assistants are expected to model ethical behavior for all residence hall policies and procedures. Failure to demonstrate ethical behavior may result in personnel action up to and including dismissal
- Maintain positive working relationships with other Residential Life and Residential Student Services Program Staff, Resident Faculty, and community partners
- Follow expectations when communicating / engaging with residents in person, in writing and / or social media as outlined in this job agreement, the Residential Life Student Staff Manual, the Residential Code of Conduct and the UC Berkeley Campus Code of Conduct

- Maintain confidentiality and objectivity in all matters related to students and staff
- Perform other duties as assigned by the RD or SRD and the administrative staff of the Dean of Students Office and partners at Residential & Student Services Programs
- Adequately able to balance academic demands and other commitments with the duties and responsibilities of the RFRA position that contribute to the success of the team dynamic
Qualifications
Required:
- Undergraduate student possessing a minimum 2.300 cumulative GPA and good standing with the University at the start of position and throughout the period of employment. Please note that GPA does not round up, any GPA below a 2.300 (2.299 or below) will make you ineligible for this position
- Full-time academic status (minimum of 12-13 units per semester) during the period of employment
- Must already be employed as a Resident Assistant at University of California-Berkeley
Preferred:
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills
- Ability to facilitate community among individuals
- Strong time management and task prioritization skills
- Experience in academic program or event planning in Residential Life, a similar group living experience, or an extra-curricular organization, such as an internship or club
- Demonstrates academic interest in the Resident Faculty program
Terms of Employment
- This position will be compensated at a rate of $19.18/hr and is expected to work an average of 3 hours per week during the duration of employment, which are included in the 19 working hours per week for the RA role.
- Maintain the required 2.300 minimum GPA throughout the term of employment. RFRAs must submit a copy of an official grade report to Residential Life.
- Maintain full-time academic status (12-13 units per semester) throughout the term of employment. The period of employment for the RFRA position commences with the start of student staff training (see below for details) and concludes with the closing of the residence halls
- Active participation in RFRA Fall and Spring Training, which will take place during Hall Staff training prior to the start of each semester. You will receive an email from ResLife with your Hall Staff training dates. Any additional RFRA trainings will be communicated via email in advance.
- RFRAs are expected to work during some evenings and weekends
- Continued employment is contingent upon a satisfactory job performance evaluation by the supervisor. Satisfactory job performance evaluation is defined as meeting expectations as defined by the job evaluation in all areas of the job description. Failure to meet expectations on two different evaluation periods may result in release from your employment
