Professor Jovan Lewis is an Assistant Professor in the Departments of Geography and African American Studies and a core faculty of the Economic Disparities Cluster in the Haas Institute for a Fair and Inclusive Society. He joined Berkeley in 2015 after completing his PhD and a postdoctoral research fellowship at the London School of Economics. His research areas include post-coloniality in the Caribbean, poverty and inequality in the US, and the relationship between ideas of race and economic practice. Keep an eye out for Professor Lewis’ forthcoming book that studies lottery scamming among poor young men in Jamaica in the wake of structural adjustment. His work has been profiled in various media outlets in the U.S., Jamaica, and Canada. Professor Lewis moved to Berkeley with his wife and young son and enjoys spending his free time with them exploring the Bay Area with them.
